Swaroop Vedula, MBBS, MPH, PhD
Dr. Swaroop Vedula is a member of the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare and the Johns Hopkins Data Science and AI Institute, where he leads the AI for Surgery Lab at Johns Hopkins University. His team develops practical engineering solutions to address important problems in surgical care. The lab focuses on three main research areas: creating autonomous surgical care systems, developing surgeon-machine partnerships where computers can communicate with surgeons using natural language, and ensuring quality surgical care is available to everyone. Dr. Vedula combines engineering, surgical data science, and epidemiology in his work, which impacts many surgical specialties including ophthalmology, otolaryngology- head and neck surgery, thoracic surgery, general surgery, urology, gynecology, and gastroenterology. His research on surgical performance analysis is funded by National Institutes of Health grants and focuses on using AI to analyze surgical videos and sensor data, creating easy-to-use applications that can be used by surgeons worldwide.
